5 questions for a health professional about speaking in English

What do health pros say about speaking in English when it’s not their first language?

Viviana is from Spain and works in a medical lab in New Zealand.

  1. How do you feel about speaking in English?
I like speaking in English to one or two people. That’s not a problem for me.

  2. What’s the hardest thing about speaking in English?
Speaking to a group is very difficult. I’m shy so it’s hard in Spanish and even worse in English. I know what I want to say but when I’m ready to speak, they have moved to the next topic already. Team meetings are a nightmare.

  3. How do you overcome this?
I learnt some speaking techniques and tips about participating in meetings in an EPRO Express session. We practised together and that made me feel more confident.

  4. What are your speaking goals?
To be comfortable giving my opinions and ideas in our team meetings.

  5. What’s your advice for others who need to speak in English?
You need to practise with someone who can give you feedback plus ideas how to improve. That helped me.
