5 questions for a health professional about speaking in English

What do health pros say about speaking in English when it’s not their first language?

Saori is a nurse from Japan working in a rest home as a carer in an English-speaking country.

  1. How do you feel about speaking in English?
I think my speaking is too basic. I always say the same things again and again. But I really want to get to know my patients better.

  2. What’s the hardest thing about speaking in English?
I don’t know what to say when I’m helping my patients with their ADLs (activities of daily living) and when their visitors come.

  3. How do you overcome this?
I did an EPRO Express and my coach gave me lots of ideas about what local people like to talk about. We also practised conversations. Her feedback was really helpful.

  4. What are your speaking goals?
I want to be comfortable making small talk with my patients and their family members.

  5. What’s your advice for others who need to speak in English?
Find someone to practise with who can explain your mistakes and give you advice how to improve your speaking.
