Here’s what André, who’s French and works in an English-speaking country, is concerned about:

  • How do you feel about using English at work?
    Most of the time I feel comfortable, but I need to make a better impression by expressing myself more like the local staff.
  • What’s the hardest thing about using English?
    I’ve noticed that local colleagues use certain expressions in meetings. This makes them sound like they know what they’re talking about, so others listen more to their ideas. I want to be able to do the same.
  • How do you overcome this?
    My English communication coach suggested a step-by-step process to help me use the same expressions as my colleagues do. We first identified the phrases. Now I’m working on catchphrases and then I’ll be able to use the expressions with confidence.
  • What are your goals?
    I want to influence people for my ideas in meetings, so I need to sound more like them.
  • What’s your advice for others who need English for work?
    Don’t waste time trying on your own. Find a coach who can help you with what you need to improve.
